I've had my two ferrets for 8 years since I was a little girl, and I can tell they're going to pass soon, it's breaking my heart more everyday. When I saw their health going down I tried my best to get money together for a vet but as I have other animals that need various medications it's taken me too long and now I have to use the money to say goodbye to them:( But I really need some advice on when the best time to make that trip to the vets is... My Albion girl Honey got treatment for adrenal disease about 4 months ago, things improved for awhile but now she's blind, loosing hair again and has blood in her faeces.. She's just in a bad state, but has a lot more energy than her brother Prince who has a large tumour/growth on stomach and struggles to move around and just wants to sleep most of the day. It's upsetting me so much to even think about losing them. Although they are still eating and drinking and can 'play' for a few minutes I need to know when the right time is from someone with more experience than myself. I love my two so much and I couldn't forgive myself if I left it too late and they had unnecessary suffering, and I don't want to do it too early if they're still having good quality of life. As they do seem happy to see me and get a cuddle, and also happy when they get their food, I'm giving them as much TLC as I can right now but is they anything else I can do to help?

I'm so sorry . It's hard to lose ferret friends you've know all their lives, harder than just about anything. I will say that you have to judge when, unless you get obvious signs. We have a female who will be 9 in March, the oldest ferret we've ever had. She's almost blind and deaf, but she still gets around. Every time we think today is the day, she shows a new spurt of life. If we thought she was in serious pain, we would do what we had to to stop her suffering. We have been expecting her to go in her sleep for a year. They'll let you know

Blood in her poop is an emergency situation - it's time to let her go - that's my opinion and I'm sorry The other one - you have to consider what is quality of life - is sleeping all day and being uncomfortable when you're awake a good quality of life? If they're still interested in food that does say something but if they used to be very playful and energetic and now they can barely move and are probably uncomfortable, if not in pain, then I think it might be time to let him go too But like unclejoe said - only you can really decide. Having ferrets for 9 years is quite remarkable - you've obviously done a good job caring for them. Don't doubt your ferret knowledge now.
