Here is a collection of some posts regarding ferret proofing - there's more too it then you'd think and here are some examples that we can all learn from:

In general you should get down to a ferrets level and look from there what they can get into. For instance I would have never known that there was an opening under the vanity in my bathroom - but Maya found it right away! And then Gabby found it - and ended up in the bathroom downstairs after she'd gotten into the wall!
You want to keep plants, wires, anything fragile, high enough so they can't get at them or if they have to be on the floor, i.e. wires...protect them against sharp ferret teeth by covering them up.
Also watch how your ferrets play and they'll show you other things to consider - for example, I have a lamp in my room that comes down into a point, like a V. Never thought about it until I found Joey stuck in the smallest point of the V gasping for breath!
He must have put his front paws up and slipped and then was wedged in there. Thankfully I found him pretty quickly - I'm not sure how long he was there but he was pretty close to passing out and he was drooling.
The best plan is to watch them when they're out. I'm always supervising mine and they show me new feats they're capable of every day. I rarely leave my ferrets alone in a room and I don't allow them free range of the whole house.
I know a lot of ferrents let their ferrets roam like a cat or dog would - I just think that's too dangerous and I wouldn't forgive myself for something that could have been prevented.
I will, on occassion, and only if I saw them use the bathroom with my own two eyes recently - I'll open the door to their room and let them run up and down the hall while my BF stays guard half way down the stairs.
They don't even need a toy to play with when they do that - they're just happy to be running around like maniacs.
