Hi my name is mike a few days ago my ferret started acting kind of odd he wasn't very active and was sleeping almost the entire day. I took him to the vet today and found out that he had a broken foot/leg the Dr. there said that she was going to get ahold of a more experienced Dr. to figure out what should be done as far as surgery. I'm just wondering how serious the break is. Like is this a life threatening situation or can this be easily fixed? Also how much does it usually cost to perform this type of surgery? I'm willing to do whatever it takes to fix it i just wanted a little information so I'm a little more educated when i take him back for surgery.

I wish I could help you about the broken leg but I don't know much about that. I do know that ferrets do well with all kinds of surgeries so you can be optimistic that your little guy will do fine. I will advise you to keep your ferret as healthy as possible so that he is strong for any surgery he may have. Make sure he's eating well in particular... do you give him duck soup? If not, this is a good time to start. There are lots of recipes in the nutrition section, but mainly its cooked chicken blended with softened kibble, and you can add ferretone, stage 2 meat babyfood and other things, depending on your ferret's needs.
Good luck and please keep us posted. We'll be watching for your next post.

It depends on where it's broken. Some ferrets have had a cast for broken bones but others need surgery. You just want to make sure and do something so it grows back correctly. I don't know the costs and have never dealt with this myself but have seen pics of ferrets with casts from broken legs. My thoughts and prayers will be with you both.
