it is bright red, looks a little blood blistery but not purple. there is no puss or fluid leaking and it doesn't look fester-y. it has a slight bump to it in the middle but there is still hair growing there and around the area and as i was touching it, she didn't flinch or seem like it bothered her so i don't think it is something that she scratched at to make it red. i JUST took her to the vet 3 weeks ago and this was not there. the doctors took blood and said all of her levels were fine but she is two and a half and i know that this is when ferrets can start developing illnesses. this is the only one on her so i'm not sure about it being an allergic reaction. is this what mosquito bites look like on ferrets? spider bite? could this be a mole just popping up quickly? could it be a tumor? please let me know any thoughts you have and any advice. i am going to be keeping an eye on it for the next couple of days, of course but anything else would be really appreciated. - scared mom

Hey Guys! I know that I probably should have checked out the board before I went all paranoid mom... I found a couple of posts in the health/medical threads about mole/lesions and they all look similar and it seems that this must be a mast cell tumor. I am going to watch it for the next couple of days and if it gets any worse/different, I am taking her to the vet but everyone seems to be relieved within a couple of days by the spot's disappearance. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I was going to suggest that it looks an awful lot like a mast cell tumor ... so I think you've got it covered. Keep a close eye on your ferret for any other signs of something being out of the ordinary. Kudos to you for being so observant!

I think it's a mast cell tumor too. They come and go so don't be surprised if it does. Almost always benign with only concern if the ferret scratches it and it gets infected.

The vet just called and the biopsy came back saying he has a rare disease called Cryptococcosis. Which apperently can be contracted from soil, fecal manner, some types of trees and pigeon droppings. Its common in cats, in Australia. I live in BC Canada so this is quiet a suprise and has take along time to figure it out. We lost his brother to this, glad to have figured it out in time before his health deteriorate further.
Its a multi-organism fungus. At the moment the side effects on my ferret from the disease are -Phenomena (coughing, fluids in lungs) -Lethargy (has gotten much better with the Phenomena medicine from the last week) - loss of appetite - Bird seed stools, Dark green slimy stools
There has only been a few reported cases of this in North America therefor it is hard to pin down. We had a biopsy done on a pimple like growth and it came back as this.
Now we finally know and its curable with medicine
Cheers, Mike

I just lost my Hershey to a type of cancer of the skin. My vet said he is seeing a lot more cancers in ferrets from the mills (Marshall's) because they are in-breeding their ferrets and have not brought new blood in for breeding or at least enough new blood. As for the fungus, WOW, glad you had the bx done and got a definitive diagnosis. So many times we just skip that part and go right to treating.

My Koda has a red sore on her arm that keeps reappearing, it will go away for a bit and then come back. I can't afford to take her to the vet right now but I am worried about her. She is pretty old, eight, but I want her to be healthy so she can live longer. I will forever regret if she passes awway when I could've prevented it. The sore looks like a blood blister, any ideas?? I have a picture but I can't get it to upload... Thanks, Concerned Mama Bear

Sounds to me like a mast cell tumor - they are benign and grow and fall off. if your ferret isn't biting or scratching at it it's probably okay. with an 8 year old ferret I wouldn't bother with a biopsy in MY PERSONAL OPINION, not a medical opinion, because if it's cancer they would likely not survive the treatment.
when you say that it looks like a blood blister - is it very dark, almost black? That's what Rylee had - they would be on the pads of her feet and even on the edge of her nose poor little thing. But they would just slough off

I agree, maybe a mast cell. Sending lots of good thoughts and prayers.
