hi, came home from work today found my ferret very passive. she allways comes out as soon as i open the cage. took her out and found that her lef hign leg is not moving. it seem to be a bit swallen and elevated, but not sticking out in any unusal way. she is not putting any pressure on when trying to walk, but fully using the other one. when i tuch it or stretch it out very gently she lets me and the leg goes very easily, although seems to have no sensation when i apply some cold to the paw. the paw has color and heat, ferret also has some fever. she ate and drank form my hand. im thinking sprain/strain and wondering if xrays will help determine that. i had a ferret w adrenal and insulinoma so very famliar w symptoms, this isnt it. will take her to the vet tomorrow after work. any advise meanwhile?? thank you

if it's swollen and she's not putting any pressure on it while walking, then it could be a simple injury - maybe she fell out a hammy or off a shelf in the cage? or maybe one of her claws got stuck in the fabric of the hammy and trying to get it dislodged, she ended up hurting herself?
if she was stuck and twisted herself around to get loose, then it's possible she's got some nerve damage due to the swelling - would answer for 'no sensation' when you touch the paw with cold (did you try heat as well? what about a pin to test for pain response? ). if she did get stuck or fell a distance, then a break is a possibility - although, she would probably react when you straightened the leg out if that is the case (maybe not, though, if the nerve is constricted and she just can't feel what you're doing).
she may turn out to be just fine after a good nights rest. since you didn't see what happened, there's no way to know how serious or not serious this is. tomorrow, if she's still favoring the leg and/or it's still swollen and/or she still seems to have a temp, definitely get her in to the vet for an exam.
hope it turns out to be nothing more than a minor injury that heals up quickly!!

Your little girl needs to go to the vet. She could have an infection which will need treatment - maybe just an antibiotic. Please let us know how she's doing - and don't be shy.... join the forum

Great advice in the posts above. Please do join our forum - and keep us updated on how your ferret is doing. We have a bunch of 'worriers' here (myself included) who won't be happy until they hear everything is resolved and your little weasel is once more bouncing off walls in typical weasel fashion.

The only way to be sure it's not somethng broken vs and infection is to take her to the vet. X-rays might be needed. Remember ferrets temps range a little high compared to humans. I believe it's about 100 to 103 degrees, but I'm not sure. She'll be in our thoughts and prayers.
