Hi there, I woke up this morning to my male ferret screaming (he's about 1 and a half). He usually will whine, coo, or make cute little soft noises in his sleep from time to time, but this was a full on scream. It sounded almost like a loud bird chirping. I held him and calmed him down a little, but he would start screaming again out of nowhere, calm down, and scream again. I tried to feel around to see if touching anything made him scream (thinking maybe he was hurt) but I didn't get a reaction. I put him back in his cage and he's now sleeping soundly. I've never had this reaction from him or my female, so I'm a little freaked out. Was it just a really bad nightmare that continued to scare him even after he was awake? I don't know what to do for the poor guy.

I don't know. The only time I have heard a ferret scream was when he was awake but scared. I think if it happens again I would schedule a vet visit. That's not normal (but who's ferret is?). Sending lots of good thoughts and prayers.

Sounds like he could have had a nightmare. I've heard my ferrets make some weird noises in their sleep before. Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestions! After his morning nap that day he seemed back to normal and he hasn't had any issues since then. It was just bizarre and I was worried it was a sign of some unforeseen problem. I'm glad he's ok!

Hello, I know the screaming noise you are talking about. It chills you to the bone. It usually is associatied with being frightened, threatened or being caught off guard. This includes bad dreams. He may have still been in the ferret sleep when you picked him up, thats why it did not stop.
I was just wondering if you know if your ferret is deaf? My deaf ones have these screaming fits occasionally. My first ferret Harley was deaf, and everytime he sneezed he would scare himself so badly that he would start these screeching fits. The other day we got a foster ferret in, we went about and started to bathe her as we always do with fosters, and the minute she got near the water she started screaming her lungs out. Scared us to death at first, but then we just started laughing. Poor little thing.
I am glad he is okay....most likely a nasty ferret dream.
