We have 2 young ferret girls, and are also first time ferret owners. The girls spend their days playing in our bathroom and sleep in their cage at night.
I went in to play with them, but didn't see my chocolate girl anywhere. Then I saw it! The heater vent had been pulled up from the tile & pushed aside. I ran and got a mirror and flashlight, and she was just sitting there several feet down. She did come to me after a few minutes, thank goodness. My heart is still in my throat several hours later! This could have turned out so horrible!
I just wanted to post this, as a warning to others.
[edit] I'm sorry, I just realized I posted this in the wrong area.

Sometimes I think ferrets are the main cause of heart attacks Glad everything turned out well!

No kidding! Our first major incident was letting them play with a paper towel tube unsupervised. The same chocolate girl got stuck in it! I have no idea how she fit. I went in to check on them, and she was just laying on her back on the floor and she had gotten the tube pulled over herself. Her little head was sticking out one end, rear out the other. It didn't even look real it was so odd. She was just laying there like, "Hi! How ya doing?" like nothing at all was wrong. I laugh about it now, I mean she looked so pathetic. I wish I had taken a picture, it just looked so odd! She was also able to squeeze out from underneath the bathroom door when she was a bit younger. I woke up from a nap on the couch, and she was on my legs. I really almost had a heart attack then, I thought it was a rat or something! She's gonna be keeping me on my toes, that's for sure! Her sister is spunkier, but not nearly as mischievous. Or not yet anyway.

Watch out, because what one does, the other learns. My sweet little Dakota was the nicest little boy, until Tamma taught him a thing or two Even though Dakota was always a bit better behaved, they were like Bonnie and Clyde sometimes. But so much fun!! Enjoy them - when your heart rate returns to normal

Ugh! My second day of having my fuzzies home, one of my girls found a major flaw in my ferret proofing. I was playing with my other girl, and when I went to find her, I couldn't find her anywhere! Then, much to my dismay- I found that she had found her way into one of our BIG speakers, pulled the cover off partially at the bottom and had squeezed herself into the hollow hole near the bottom. I tired coaxing her out with treats and water, but no matter how hard she tried she couldn't squeeze her chubby butt back out! I spent a good 10 minutes or so sweet talking her while trying to unscrew several rusted screws to take the large speaker cover off. I rescued her and turned the speakers backwards against the wall, and apparently she seems to have thought it was fun, because she tries to be hulk ferret and get between the wall and the speaker. Trouble makers, these ones. lol If I didn't know better, I'd say the one purposely provided a distraction.

My ferrets love to try to get into the speakers too! I finally stuffed a towel into the hole. It's in there so tight that I have a hard time getting it back out. But it works.

My mom barged into my room at 2 in the morning a few weeks ago, holding my little girl. I was sound asleep and it scared me to death. Turns out, I hadn't shut the cage door (the floor tilts and the doors never stay open so it looked closed) and she had gotten out, walked out of my room, past the living room (and our reclining sofa!!!!), past the storage room full of boxes, past the kitchen and roach traps, and into the bedroom. She ignored a roach trap and the washer and drier to knock over the trashcan before going into my parents' room and crawling under the bed!
After realizing the billion ways she could've gotten hurt that night, I keep my room boarded off from the rest of the house with their playpen up like a baby gate.

After reading these posts it reminds me of the day I spent crying my eyes out because my little girl got out of the apartment and was lost for almost twelve hours. Thank god my boyfriend found her and she is home safe and sound and thankfully hasn't gotten out again since. STill not sure how she got out in the first place, but I was wondering does anyone know of a way to have them tagged or marked in someway so that (god forbid) she gets out again, she will be easily identifyable as a pet and not a wild rodent and possibly trapped and or killed.... since the day she got out i have been super paranoid and need someway to know.....
