1. Give all you neighbor's and friend's a emergency phone number were you can be reached if the power goes out wile you are at work or away from home. Make sure your cell phone is charged.
2. If you have a friend, neighbors or family member that lives closer to your home than you, when you are at work give them a key to your house and instructions on what to do till you get home.
3. If you have a phone answering machine take the back up battery out and call home every hour or sooner to make sure it's still working this is a way for you to know if the power has failed.
4. have an emergency plan on what to do and a place to take your ferrets if the power fails. Talk with friends and family that do not live in you area make arrangements to stay with them till the power is restored. Police and fire stations have emergency generators, explain you situation to them and ask them if you can stay inside the building till the power is restored. Keep a grab bag handy with ferret food and toys and treats this could be stressful on your ferrets so you want to make them as comfortable as possible and you don't know how long you are going to be away from home.
5. If you have a generator or access to one make sure it is in proper working order and you can get to it 24/7.
6. Know were you can get ice 24/7, pick some up on your way home to help cool your ferrets. Also keep ice packs or frozen bottles of water in your freezer. the bottles of water can be used to cool your ferrets and for them to drink.
7. If you have a car with ac make sure it is in working order and you engines cooling system is in proper condition. if your car fails you could get stuck on the side of the road for a long time.
8. This is only a last resort park you car in the shade and use it as an emergency shelter stay in you car with your ferrets with the ac on keep a close eye on them for any signs of heat related concerns.
I hope that everybody can keep their fuzzies safe in the heat.
